This little museum, located right off I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso, is a natural hidden wonder. Even though it’s not huge or fancy, it’s chock full of all kinds of local treasures and native American artifacts.
Established in 1939, this place is like stepping through a time machine. With three floors of exhibits, you’ll be immersed in the rich history of our great state.
For instance, they have an award-winning Indian Exhibit with ancient Native American stuff that will blow your mind. And there’s a whole room dedicated just to fascinating fossils. Each floor takes you back through time in a different way. And the lovely staff who work there really make the visit special.

Back in 1939, they put up a 13-foot granite monument to Davy right there in our city park. And let me tell you, folks come from all around to see it and snap pictures in front of this impressive memorial.

The Emerald House is a real historical spectacle. This house has quite the story behind it. It was built in 1889 and used to be in the town of Emerald – the first settlement in Crockett County! How cool is that?
But then, as time passed and the town of Emerald moved to become Ozona, wouldn’t you know it – the Emerald House moved along with it! It used to be a big deal sitting right on Ozona’s main street. But in 1981, it found a new home in our county park so everyone could enjoy this slice of history.
It’s been owned by some important folks in Ozona over the years. People like E.M. Powell, Phil Perner, and W.A. Cochran have been caretakers, ensuring its charm and significance are preserved for our community.

Personal Experience in Ozona Texas
Back in 2021, I decided to check out Ozona for the first time. This was still during COVID-19, so we had to mask up and keep our distance whenever we went anywhere. Most places were closed up or had limited hours, even government offices.
I really needed to update some important information on my driver’s license, but getting an appointment at the San Antonio DMV was a big challenge. But then my husband had this bright idea. He said we should try the Ozona DMV and turn it into a little day trip! Can you believe it – we got the soonest appointment in just a minute and were ready for our Ozona adventure!
We made sure to be on time for our appointment, and let me tell you, the staff there was so friendly and welcoming. He took us right in and got my application squared away lickety-split. And you know what – we even chat with the staff about our visit. He shared the inside scoop on what to see and do in Ozona.
We could see the pride in his eyes and joy in his voice as a resident of Ozona. He gave us great recommendations on places to grab a bite and sights to take in. Unfortunately, COVID kept us from doing too much on that trip, but we drove around and were blown away by Ozona’s natural beauty and history.
It was definitely one of the best trips to DMV we have ever had.
