“So, your husband wears cowboy boots, right?”
“Have you learned to ride a horse yet?”
Whenever I mention to friends that I have relocated to Texas, these are some of the questions I usually get right off the bat. I’m always proud and slightly amused to answer, yes. He indeed is inseparable from his cowboy boots, and my first horse riding lesson was just three short months ago.
When one hears ‘Texas,’ thoughts often drift to cowboys, horses, and cactus. I had similar stereotypes before making the move here myself.
But, three years have passed since we took up residence in Texas. Both my husband and I wish we had made the decision sooner. Texas hides many wonders beneath its rugged surface. And it’s not just about living that Western life.
There is so much more to Lone Star State beneath the surface.
If you’re considering a move, or perhaps you’re still on the fence about moving to Texas, why not stick around? Let me take you through 25 compelling reasons why uprooting to Texas might be one of the best decisions you make.
Let’s dive in!
25 Reasons You Should Move to Texas
#1 – Booming Economy
We all spend most of our time working, so of course you’re going to think about your career before moving to Texas.
Fortunately, Texas boasts a strong and varied economy, offering a whole bunch of job opportunities across all sorts of industries. The thriving economy we have here is a magnet for businesses and job seekers alike.
We have a mix of industries on the rise, like technology services, energy production, manufacturing, and healthcare services, just to name a few. These growing sectors offer our fellow Texans countless job possibilities, allowing both newcomers and seasoned residents the chance to flourish.
So, if you’re ready to explore the booming job market, Texas would be an ideal place to make a name for yourself and build a future in one of these thriving fields.
#2 – No State Income Tax
Perhaps one of the reasons Texas has such a great economy is the fact it has no income tax. Texas is one of the few states that doesn’t.
This means more of your paycheck stays where it belongs, right in your wallet. Over time, this can create a pleasing difference in your bank account. Even the sales tax isn’t that high!
But don’t think for a minute that it benefits only the individual worker bees. Businesses enjoy the dance too.
So, it’s no wonder that Texas, with its friendly tax environment, has become such an ideal hub for startups and well-established corporations alike.
#3 – World-Renowned Medical Facilities
Texas is home to many pretty spectacular medical facilities – no two ways about it. From one end of our beautiful state to the other, you’ll find top-tier hospitals and clinics equipped to offer the very best of care.
Right off the top of my head, there are:
- The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
- The Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston
- St. David’s Medical Center in Austin
- UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
These renowned medical institutions go above and beyond to offer unparalleled healthcare services, ensuring that Texans always have a reliable option for anything related to their well-being.
Whether you’re eyeing the Lone Star State as your future home or you’re lucky enough to call it home already, rest assured, that Texas has your back when it comes to world-class healthcare.
#4 – Beautiful Cultural Diversity
Texas – where culture and diversity walk hand in hand.
This state doesn’t just brag about its bigger-and-better spirit. It also celebrates a rich tapestry of cultures that makes it truly one-of-a-kind. From the different traditions to distinct cuisines, Texas serves up an experience like no other.
Whether you find yourself captivated by the dynamic city life of Houston or grooving to the infectious tunes in the music-filled air of Austin, every corner of Texas tells a unique story.
And let’s not forget El Paso’s deeply ingrained Hispanic heritage and the coastal allure of Corpus Christi – they only add more texture to this bold cultural medley.
#5 – Affordable Housing
For those on the hunt for wallet-friendly living without skimping on quality and lifestyle amenities, Texas checks all the right boxes.
Texas stands out with its relatively affordable homes, especially when compared to states like New York and California, where real estate prices can skyrocket. And with lower housing prices, you don’t need to worry about giving up on the lifestyle or urban amenities you cherish.
The appeal of affordable housing not only tells you why so many people find their dream home in Texas but also shines a light on the bright opportunity it offers newcomers.
#6 – Educational Opportunities Across the Board
It’s nearly impossible to talk about Texas without mentioning its educational institutions. Key cities across the state – like San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, and Houston – host a variety of top-tier educational institutions, ready to enrich the lives of those who dwell there.
Famous institutions, including Rice University, The University of Texas System, and A&M University, call Texas home. Whether you’re looking to pursue advanced studies or moving with family, you’ll find an array of education options dotting the state.
With the richness and diversity of school districts or prestigious universities, Texas ensures all educational bases are well covered.
Relocating to Texas thus opens up a world of well-rounded and high-quality education opportunities, reassuring everyone that their learning needs will be taken care of. Texas puts education at the heart of its thriving communities.
#7 – Big Sky Views
Texas invites you to find your space under its expansive skies. In Texas, every day concludes with an expansive canvas of sky brushed with hues of breathtaking sunsets. Towns nestled in the Hill Country, like Bandera or Fredericksburg, are celebrated for their star-kissed nights and picturesque wildflower trails.
As the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse in April 2024 nears, the Texas Hill Country is set to become a choice destination to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event. You better be moving to Texas soon if you don’t want to miss it!
#8 – Friendly People
The well-known Texan friendliness is not just a stereotype but a real defining characteristic of the Lone Star State. Whether you’re in a bustling city like San Antonio or one of the peaceful rural areas, the warm and welcoming nature of Texans never waver.
This became clearer when I moved into a large community ranch out in the Texas Hill Country. Despite not having the chance to meet anyone due to juggling the move and our full-time jobs for two months, the friendliness of our neighbors was reminiscent of true Texan hospitality.
One particular neighbor always greeted us when we passed by and made several attempts to formally introduce himself. His earnest friendliness, once we finally had a chance to meet, made a lasting positive impact.
This encounter turned into a beautiful friendship and a mutual support system in the face of challenges — reaffirming the heartfelt inclusivity that truly sets Texas apart.
#9 – Plenty of Outdoor Activities
For outdoor enthusiasts, Texas offers a variety of adventures with its diverse geographical offerings.
Hiking and camping amid the serene landscapes of Hill Country, delving into the stark beauty of Devils River, national parks like Big Bend and the Guadalupe Mountains, taking advantage of the abundant hiking trails, enjoy the glamping adventure or roughing it out at an array of camping sites – there’s something for everyone.
With its plentiful recreational options that cater to various preferences, Texas ensures an experience tailored to quench your thirst for adventure.
#10 – Savor Delicious Food from Tex-Mex Dishes to Texas Barbeque Style
In the heart of Texas, there are few things we hold dearer than our time-tested culinary traditions. Nowhere is this more evident than in the art of Texas barbecue – a symphony of slow-cooked meat over wood or charcoal.
Legendary joints like Franklin Barbecue in Austin are a testament to this tradition. It is not uncommon to see people lined up at the crack of dawn, eager to secure a taste of that fall-off-the-bone goodness.
And let’s not forget the unforgettable blend of Texan and Mexican culinary heritage, forming our beloved Tex-Mex cuisine — a testament to our state’s vibrant diversity.
Grab a seat at Matt’s El Rancho in Austin, and you’ll soon find yourself lost in a fiesta of flavor amidst a lively atmosphere. Make sure not to miss out on the Bob Armstrong Dip, one classic that’s taken folks by the heartstrings for ages.
It’s a culinary tour like no other!
#11 – Your Dollar Stretches Further in The Lone Star State
Now, let’s chat about something especially near to our hearts here in Texas – our earnings. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, come 2023-2024, our state average weekly wage made a jump to $1,173.81.
Big and bright like our starry nights, that figure just goes to show the grit and resilience of our economy, standing tall despite global challenges thrown its way.
You’ll even find the going easier when planning those family vacations, with dollars to spare after all’s been said and done. When you move to Texas, you get the bigger slice of the life you’ve been hankering for.
#12 – Weather Variety
Among the things that make Texas uniquely dazzling is its diverse weather. From scorching summers to temperate winters, dry western reaches of the Red River Valley to humid coastal regions of the Gulf Coast, Texas has it all.
As a Vietnamese accustomed to 85-degree weather, and having braved 10 snowy winters in the Northeast, I found my sweet spot in the balmy 65-degree average of the Texas Hill Country. Even our present drought can’t take away the joy of summers that are 5 degrees cooler than in the city.
In Texas, y’all, there’s a weather flavor for everyone!
#13 – Sports Sports Sports
There’s a rich depth to the sports culture in Texas, something that caters to every fan, be it football, soccer, basketball, or even the thrill of the rodeo. If sports strike a chord in your heart, Texas is a place where you’ll feel right at home.
We’re proud of our local teams across the board. We’ve got the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans adding spice to the NFL season. And the hoops fans aren’t left out, with the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs keeping us on the edge of our seats in the NBA.
If baseball is your passion, you’re in luck. The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers keep the diamond shining bright. We’ve even got our soccer standouts, FC Dallas and Austin FC, growing the love of the sport right here in the state.
Easily one of the greatest reasons why moving to Texas should be top of your list!
#14 – Lone Star Pride
“Lone Star Pride” connotes a profound sense of identity and unity that we Texans feel for our magnificent state. Rooted deep in our history, culture, and traditions is a strong connection, symbolized by that solitary star on our Texas flag.
Venture around, and you’ll notice those flags rippling in the wind outside homes, and ranch gates, carrying our Lone Star symbol. Each flag is a testament to the independent spirit that thrives to this day.
And if you’re planning on becoming a part of this great state, be prepared for that same passion to start reflecting within you.
#15 – Music Scene
Where music pulses under the Texas stars, Austin is the place to be! Here, the Austin City Limits music festival casts a worldwide spell, making the heart of Texas beat to a global rhythm.
Toss in the Circuit of The Americas with its host of entertainment and cultural events, and you’ve found the “Live Music Capital of the World.” So, if your soul dances to music, consider moving on down to Austin, Texas – there isn’t a better place to be!

#17 – The Beauty of The Texas Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country, it’s more than just a place – it’s where natural beauty dances with a hearty Texan culture. Rolling hills, wildflower vistas, and tight-knit towns like Fredericksburg form this hidden gem.
My husband and I put down roots in the Texas Hill Country in 2021 and we are in love with this place. One of our favorite activities is hiking down South Llano River State Park with our dog. The park’s trails shine under the wide-open sky.
It would be a mistake if I didn’t mention the staff at the Visitor Center. They are as friendly as a fresh-baked pie. They are always ready to guide you, and hand over a sturdy trash bag if needed.
Yes, even their trash bags would make momma proud! They also spruce up the calendar with events like Astronomy with Buddy, Turkey Trot 5K runs, and Christmas at the Ranch — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
#18 – Equine Culture
I know what I said about it being stereotypical about Texans loving horses, but it is true. It is certainly an amazing part of the culture to embrace.
Horsemanship runs deep in the Texan soil. We Texans hold our equestrian traditions near and dear. From ranching to horse competitions, these activities paint the landscape of Texas.
The state’s equestrian culture, a unique blend of old-world Western traditions with modern riding, remains a vibrant part of Texas’ heart.
#19 – Ranch Style
Living here in Texas, I’ve found my calling in the true Texan rural life. Be it horseback riding, cattle ranching, or agriculture, it all sings a vibrant song of freedom. This ranch lifestyle, steeped in our cowboy heritage, ties us closer to nature and the people around us.
If it’s the balanced and authentic Texan experience you seek, look no further than the wide-open skies of the Texas countryside – it truly is a slice of heaven.

#21 – Proximity to Mexico
Living in Texas, I reckon one of the gifts we often take for granted is being knee-deep in Mexican culture just one border leap away.
Now, as someone who’s always loved diversifying my playbook, this close proximity has given me an open door to experience rich traditions, thrilling travel adventure, and let’s not forget, mouthwatering Mexican dishes.
To all those entrepreneurs out there, it’s not just about tacos and fiestas, but fruitful business opportunities are ripe for the picking too.
#22 – Low Unemployment comparing to national average
Texas isn’t just about wide-open skies. We’ve got ourselves a fine job market, beating those national averages like a drum. Our industries – energy, tech, healthcare, and manufacturing – they’re like a well-coached team, always pushing forward.
In 2023 alone, the employment rate and job growth were 2.1%, which is just brilliant!
It’s our business-friendly environment that calls out to companies, enticing them to grow and create more and more opportunities. I’m proud to say we are paving a wide road for diverse career prospects and economic stability.
#23 – The Wildlife
Though I never considered myself much of an animal person, life here in Texas has a way of opening your eyes to the beauty of wildlife. That, and the love of my energetic German Shepherd, Buffy, who made our walks an everyday adventure.
Soon enough, I found myself captivated by the elegance of the Blackbuck – their confidence and speed were just as impressive as our Texas sports legends on the field. We are not just observing wildlife, we’re experiencing a part of what makes this state, our home, so special.
#24 – Historical Sites
Here in the Lone Star State, our rich history has a way of making us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves, much like our love for sports.
Our pride runs deep, from the iconic Alamo, standing tall as an emblem of sacrifice and resilience, to the fabled San Jacinto Battlefield, where Texas won her independence.
#25 – Cowboy Boots: More Than Just Footwear
And finally, I couldn’t end up writing a list like this without mentioning the iconic cowboy boots.
Worn everywhere and a major draw for all, but specifically during Western-themed events, rodeos, country music concerts, and festivals, these boots are the lifeblood of Texas.
These boots aren’t just a fashion statement; they’re a deep-rooted tradition, a symbol of pride as lively as our sports culture. When you’re slipping into a pair of those distinct leathers, remember, you are part of the Texas family.
Finding Your Spot in Texas
Whether you have a penchant for city lights, peace in nature, or a delightful balance of both, Texas has something to offer you.
Big Cities: The Urban Experience
If city life with its pace, amenities, and career possibilities appeals to you, consider Texas’ larger major cities. Houston, home to the distinguished Space Center Houston, and Austin, our thriving state capital, are full of opportunities.
Meanwhile, diverse cities like Dallas, Fort Worth in North Texas are notable for their respected school districts and appealing real estate markets, drawing families year after year.
Scenic Tranquility: The Rural Retreat
For those of you drawn towards serenity and unique natural beauty, the Texas Hill Country fits the bill. Characterized by rolling landscapes, clear rivers, and charming small towns brimming with Texas culture, it’s a tranquil haven.
The pleasantly warm weather is a stark contrast to the chilling winters in North Texas, perfect for those accustomed to warmer climates. Plus, the lowered traffic levels make for stress-free commutes.
A Balance of Both Worlds: Suburban Life
If you’re seeking a harmonious blend of the lively city and peaceful suburban existence, the suburbs situated around major cities could be your calling.
