Texas has many natural wonders, from towering canyons to winding rivers. I’ve been blessed to have lived here for the last few years. During my adventures around the Lone Star State, the Devils River has long been on my bucket list of must-visit destinations. I’ve pined over photos and blog posts, and this year, I finally got to experience its natural splendor firsthand.
Nestled in the southwestern corner of Texas, this remote waterway winds through the Chihuahuan Desert, surrounded by rugged limestone cliffs and canyons, making it one of the most pristine rivers in the country!
So, join me on a journey through one of the most unspoiled river ecosystems in the Southwest! I will share everything you need to know to plan your escape to the Devils River, from the best place to stay to the top activities.
Where to stay in the Devils River Texas
During our recent trip to the enchanting the Devils River Texas, we discovered an absolute gem we can’t keep to ourselves.
We had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Devils River Ark Bunkhouse, an utterly unique earthhouse in Del Rio, Texas.
After our experience, we couldn’t recommend it more for your next visit to the Devils River!
The House
The Ark Bunkhouse is different from your average Airbnb rental. It is a beautifully designed and constructed cabin with space for up to six people. With five comfortable beds available, this bunkhouse is a perfect fit for families or travel groups.
It’s even a pet-friendly private property, so there’s no need to worry about leaving your companion at home!
However, by far, this Ark Bunkhouse’s most remarkable, most breathtaking feature is its proximity to the river.
Imagine stepping out your door, descending the vibrant red staircase, and being greeted by the serene beauty of the Devils River.
Oh, and that’s because this house is in a remote location. You’re the only person for miles around by anyone traveling down the river, and you need a 4-wheel drive car to even get to the property, so bear that in mind before booking!
From start to finish, it’s truly an experience like no other.
The Host
Our host, Gerald, was incredibly available and helpful throughout our stay. While always there to promptly answer our questions or address any concerns, he also respected our privacy, letting us enjoy the surrounding nature and activities undisturbed.
Gerald also has a wealth of knowledge about the area. If you want to learn more about the Devils River, you will enjoy the chat with him.
Things to Know & Consider
Booking this picturesque location requires careful planning despite its charm and allure.
Firstly, we suggest you book the bunkhouse at least three months in advance due to its popularity. Trust us; the tranquil setting and unique experience make the wait worthwhile.
One other thing to bear in mind is the price. We spent roughly $300 per night, with a minimum two-night stay requirement. While this may seem expensive, splitting amongst a group of 5-6 people becomes reasonable.
Lastly, reaching this haven is an adventure with a 20-mile drive on a narrow dirt road, and you’ll need a 4-wheel drive car to get there. While challenging, it only adds to the adventure and thrill of this truly immersive nature retreat.
To wrap up, if you’re looking for an uncommon escape from everyday life, brimming with natural beauty and unique living accommodations, the Devils River Ark Bunkhouse is the place to be!

Personal Experiences
I wanted to share my experiences in this beautiful place to close off this piece.
We recently had the trip of a lifetime exploring the stunning Devils River in Southwest Texas. While the natural splendor left us awe-struck, we also learned important lessons for making the most of this destination.
Below, we’ve shared tips based on our own experience to help ensure your visit goes smoothly.
Stay Overnight in Del Rio
There would need to be more than a day trip to explore the beauty of the Devils River. We recommend staying in Del Rio before driving out to the Devils River. This gives you time to stock up on supplies and rest for the remote location.
We chilled our coolers overnight with ice bags from the local HEB, then filled them with food before making the 90-minute drive to the river. The grocery stores in Del Rio are the last you’ll see, so come prepared!
Pack a 4-Wheel Drive Vehicle
I’ve said it once, and I’ll repeat it because you must ensure you’re doing this.
A four-wheel drive vehicle is a must for navigating the rugged dirt roads leading to the Devils River. We enjoyed a thrilling 20-mile drive on backcountry paths to reach our destination. But take caution – some narrow cliffside tracks left me gripping my seat! My husband loved the adventurous feel, while I preferred safer views from the passenger window. Drive slowly and carefully.
Wear Water Shoes to Avoid Cuts
I can’t stress enough how important good water shoes are, especially if swimming and wading in the river. The slippery rocks and sharp edges will leave scratches on your barefoot and interrupt your activities.
Protect your feet with sturdy, closed-toe shoes – your experience paddling and plunging into refreshing waters will be much more pleasant.
Consider Your Pet’s Needs
We brought our beloved dog Buffy, and she had an absolute blast! The water is perfect for swimming pups who love to fetch and splash. But watch for sudden drop-offs that could startle pets and keep recall commands handy when wildlife is near.
And always remember the first-aid kit – you’re far from any vet. A few preparations go a long way to keeping your furry friend safe.
Check the Weather Regularly
Texas is known for its heat and sun, after all. However, the storms rolled in during our visit, bringing severe lightning and thunder for two days straight. Come prepared with backup indoor activities if faced with inclement weather.
We stayed at the Devils River for three days and two nights, and it was a severe storm for the whole day and night. Please check the weather to plan for your trip.
There are all-glass windows at the Airbnb. If your dog is afraid of thunderstorms, bringing them there during the rainy season wouldn’t be a good idea. Luckily, the thunderstorm and lightning didn’t bother Buffy.
And watch for flash flood risks if rains hit. Checking forecasts helps ensure your time at the Devils River stays smooth and enjoyable no matter what surprises Mother Nature throws your way!
With some preparation and our tips in mind, you will have a fantastic time in this Texas paradise. Let the magic of the Devils River leave you in awe like it did for us! Just be ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
Conservation Ethics: A Responsibility We Share
I want to speak about our important responsibility when visiting this area. The Devils River is a natural wonderland, but it can only continue to be that as long as we’re all playing our part in looking after it.
This isn’t just about rules but cultivating a mindset of deep respect.
When hiking the trails and exploring the area, stay on the path to avoid trampling delicate desert flora. While fishing, limit your catches and follow the fishing guides.
And make sure to properly dispose of all waste, even picking up any litter left by less considerate visitors.
Small acts of nature conservancy like these make a big difference in safeguarding the Devils River’s vibrant yet vulnerable ecosystem. This place has endured for millennia, but it needs our help now more than ever, especially with how popular it’s getting.
